Franklins-Sunset to Shortcut 5

This loop through the Tom Mays unit of the Franklin Mountains State Park is part of the main race course inside the park. Included is a new section of singletrack that bypasses the Jobe quarry being dug on land owned by the state of Texas. This route turns around at the sign for shortcut 5. You'll pass other shortcut turns sooner if you want a shorter ride. With 2000 feet of climb in 12 miles there's obviously not a lot of flat in this ride.

How to get there:

From I-10 at Transmountain Road (exit 6), go east 3.2 miles and turn left into Franklin Mountains State Park. Travel .8 miles into the park from the highway and turn left into a picnic area parking lot. The Sunset trailhead is at the end of the road in the lot. You'll need to pay an admission fee either at the gate or about a half mile in at the ranger station.
